Hi, I'm Steve Richert—I am a rock-climber and guide living with type 1 diabetes. I have always had a passion for climbing. The feeling I get when I'm on top of a mountain is invigorating and powerful. I feel in control and strong. To me, managing my diabetes is like climbing a mountain. They both require extreme focus, discipline and the right gear.
To share my message with the diabetes community, I created my non-profit organization, LivingVertical, to inspire people with diabetes to be confident about living with and managing their condition. Now I'm taking on a 365-day challenge—LivingVertical: Project 365—where I am climbing every day and documenting my journey as a way to spread my message.
One thing that helps me with this challenge is having the right tools, so I can test my blood sugar easily before and after my climbs. I use the ACCU-CHEK® Nano meter because it's small, sleek, accurate and simple to use. It also has a cool backlit display that allows me to test at night, which is huge as I'm often outside well after the sun goes down.
Diabetes is challenging, but it doesn't have to stop you from climbing your own mountain. I hope you'll follow my progress—and take on a mountain of your own!
