Staying Healthy While Traveling by Rudy Maxa

Rudy Maxa, contributing editor with National Geographic Traveler, and a leading consumer travel advocate, has a few important tips for anyone traveling -- with or without diabetes. Watch for Rudy on his nationwide Roche-sponsored media tour.

1. When flying, pack all medications -- clearly marked -- in your carry-on luggage. Not checked luggage. (Note: Print out the Medical Certificate from this page, and have your doctor sign it. This can be helpful when going through security and customs.)

2. The most common travelers malady is diarrhea. Take medication with you to address that potential problem.

3. Wash your hands well and frequently.

4. Make sure you're covered by medical evacuation insurance, so you can be airlifted to the hospital of your choice if you require hospitalization away from home.

5. If you’re traveling abroad and have health issues, research ahead of time so you know where to find English-speaking medical assistance. (Note: Print out the Phrase Booklet below to know how to talk about diabetes in several languages.
