Pack Wisely
If you're flying or going by bus or train, we've divided the packing lists into what belongs in the carry-on, and what can be checked. If you're driving, you can put everything in one place. But keep insulin out of the glove compartment or trunk, where it can become very hot.1
In Your Carry-On
• Snacks.1 Many domestic flights no longer offer meals. And flight delays or cancellations can mean you won't know when you'll eat next. Bring more than you'll need.
• Insulin, medications, and testing supplies. Bring double the amount you think you'll need for your whole trip, so you aren't spending your vacation hunting for extras.1 All insulin belongs in your carry-on, as checked luggage compartments can experience severe temperature fluctuations.1
• Low blood sugar emergency kit. Include glucose tabs, candy, or another quick-acting low blood sugar treatment, as well as your glucagon emergency kit,1 if you have one.
• Insulated pack for insulin. Especially if you're traveling to an extreme climate.
• Copies of prescriptions. Include the generic names for medications or insulin, since brand names may vary by country.
• A diabetes ID card. You can download one from our members-only Travel Resources page.
• A letter from your doctor, explaining what you need to do for your own diabetes.1
In Your Luggage
• Extra batteries. For your meter and, if you use one, insulin pump.
• Extra test strips. And a spare meter, if you have one.
• Snacks. Packaged crackers can go just about anywhere.
• A first-aid kit,
2 with bandages, cotton balls, disinfectant, scissors, tweezers, and nail clippers.
• Other medications for diarrhea, nausea, and constipation, as well as pain killers.1
• Your carb-counting book or lists you use at home.
• Only comfortable shoes.1 Don't go barefoot.2 And don't buy new shoes before leaving on a trip. You won't want to be breaking them in on vacation.
